EMBROIDERY: Prisma Pencil Embroidery

Did you love coloring when you were a kid or maybe you really like to doodle with pencils and fancy yourself an artist.  Well this is the perfect class for you.  We will transform embroidered outline stitch designs into a work of art using Prisma Pencils.  This is so much fun you will want to create artwork for years to come with these great techniques learned in class. Session 4 will include piecing together 4 pieces of artwork and directions for finishing the wall hanging.

We will be using an Anita Goodesign Collection.
SUPPLY LIST TO COME
“Embroider, Color & Quilt” A Wallhanging or a Tablerunner Project by Annette Luther Supply List May 2017
In this class, we will be creating blocks for a wallhanging or tablerunner, from embroidered designs that we have colored using Prismacolor Premier colored pencils.  The project features the AnitaGoodesign, Color Me With Stitches set.  Read the following supply list carefully. You will bring your Machine and Embroidery unit to the first class.  We will embroider one block, then color this block. You will learn color blending and shading techniques. Supply list: 1. AnitaGoodesign, Color Me With Stitches, set of designs. You may use any design size that will fit one of your machines’ hoops.  For my wallhanging of six blocks, I used Size B and my 200 x 200 hoop.  You may use any of the designs that you  like or use the ones that I used, which are:  1, 6, 10, 14, 17 and 21. The wallhanging of four blocks used: 7, 8, 12 and 15.  The Chart on the right, shows you the design size and the size to cut your White Kona Cotton fabric blocks, so since I used the Size B designs, I cut my fabric squares 8” x 8”.  Note:  Make sure that your chosen designs are on your machine or a USB stick before coming to class. 2. White Kona cotton.  This fabric works very well with all the pencils that I tried.  Buy enough to do all the squares that you want to do, plus extra.  This is Fun!  Using the chart, cut at least one square for class.  We will work on one block for the first class.  You will also need a scrap of the fabric for testing your colors.  This is important. Cut the square at home to save time. 3. Fabric for the block’s borders. This can be any print or color that you would like.  This fabric is part of the embroidery design, and will be cut into strips. You will only need one strip for a block.  Cut one strip, 2”w by width of fabric.  This width worked well with my Size B, you might want a 2 1/4” width for Size A or a bit narrower for Size D.  You may cut this in class if you wish. 4. You will need fabric for the back of the wallhanging, that will depend on the finished size that you make. You will wait to cut this. 5. Binding Fabric:  The amount will depend on how many blocks you use. 6. PrismaColor Premier colored pencils.  These are the absolute best pencils to use for our project.  All pencils work well on paper, but these really excel on fabric too.  Buy a set with as many colors as you can.  You can use these in those wonderful coloring books too! 7. Derwent Inktense pencils:  For those of you that want to use these pencils, I will help you with those too. My wallhanging of four blocks was done with the Inktense pencils.  These have a watercolor look.  You will need to bring a couple of small round brushes (one should be tiny)  and a small water cup. 8. Sheer Mesh cut away stabilizer.  Cut to fit your hoop.  Buy enough for all of your blocks. 9. Thin firm batting:   I like the polyester type for this project instead of cotton. 10.Embroidery thread for the main design:  Black 40 wt. Rayon or polysester in the needle.  I used a black bobbin thread. 11. Regular sewing thread can be used for the part of the embroidery design that sews down the fabric border strips.  White or a color that matches your fabric.  A white bobbin will work. 12.Emboridery needle:  Size 90 Topstitch 13.Blue painters tape to aid you in holding down the fabric border strips during embroidery.  This is optional, but not a bad idea.  Saves the fingers! 14.We will be hooping only the mesh cut away stabilizer.  I always use the “waffle” type shelf liner strips in hooping thin stuff.  It really helps hold the stabilizer tight. I cut those strips about 1.5” wide 15.You will need a ruler and rotary cutter to trim the block 16.Scissors to snip threads
